INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY - THE SALIENCY OF THE #BalanceForBetter Campaign

What started as a labour movement in the early 1900s has no doubt become an annual event. According to BBC News, about 15,000 women marched through the city of New York in 1908 demanding for better pay, shorter working hours and the right to vote. Saliently, the protest yielded result with the then Social Party of America declaring the first ever National Woman’s day in 1909.

International Women Day (IWD) is a day set aside to celebrate women and to remind the world that women are not lower/second classed homo sapien. The non-inclusion of women in diverse strata of life has made our habitat (earth) hard to manage. Obviously; 49.55% of the world’s population is not adequately represented.

This year’s theme for the IWD; BALANCE FOR BETTER is coined out to encourage the world population to make and take strategic steps in ensuring gender balance – “Gender balance” will produce a “Better life”.

In Africa, culture and traditions still pose a great barrier to gender equality. An average African man cannot come to terms with the fact that he is equal to a woman; to him that is a huge abomination.  It is only  Africa women that can be guilty of infidelity, for the man; he is just being the man that he is.

A lot needs to be done to achieve a balanced society. The campaign for #BalanceforBetter should take-off in every home.

How is the house shores shared?

Do the females do all the house shores while the males sit comfortably in the couch watching TV?

Do you still think the girl child do not deserve the best of education because she will not bear your name as a father after marriage?

Or are you also of the opinion that women belong to "the kitchen, the living room and the other room"?

These will eventually not bring out the best in them. There is a whole lot of potentials in women, they have shown to be better leaders and managers even with the imbalance.

Imagine how it will be if they have equal opportunities…
